The Program
Vision Statement: The Newport Yacht Club Junior Activities Sailing Program teaches junior members the seamanship skills and racing techniques needed to sail and operate small boats for all weather conditions while emphasizing fairness, good sportsmanship, and teamwork in a fun and safe environment.
Program Description: The Newport Yacht Club’s sailing program is open to the general public without consideration of either gender, ethnic, or financial background. The principal objectives are to provide a safe, fun-filled environment for children while introducing them to the sport of sailing and the wonderful treasures of the local Narragansett Bay waters. Our Instructors are experienced and talented and are trained and qualifed by the governing national sail training authority, USSAILING. Each instructor is also Red Cross trained in CPR/First Aid.
Students will acquire basic skills in boat handling, seamanship, water safety, team work, and sportsmanship which are “Cornerstones” of the sport. Individuals participating in this program will develop self-confidence, situational awareness, decision making skills and feel confident sailing on and around our local waters.
While racing skills are encouraged, our number one priority is for the junior sailor to have FUN while learning how to sail. Learning how to race and compete in a racing environment is available to the advanced junior sailor as this is a natural extension of developing advance sailing and boat handling skills. This is taught in a fun format with emphasis on "learning how to race".
For junior sailors who are experienced and just want to race, the program offers sail coaches who train theses sailors as a team. Many of these sailors do compete in regattas in local Narragansett Bay events and in regional events such as the Buzzard Bay Regatta, the Hyannis Regatta, the Falmouth Regatta and others. The junior sailing team has raced in many regattas over past several years and has been very successful. The 2010 Narragansett Bay Yacht Association Junior Champions raced with the Newport Yacht Club Junior Sailing team.
The Newport Yacht Club junior sailing program invites competative and non-competative junior sailors to sail with Newport Yacht Club. If you have any questions, please email juniors(at)newportyachtclub.org or contact FJ Ritt at 401-847-9838.
