Junior Activities
The Program -
Vision Statement:
The Newport Yacht Club Junior Activities Sailing Program teaches junior members seamanship skills and racing techniques needed to sail and operate small boats for all weather conditions while emphasizing fairness, good sportsmanship, equal opportunity, and teamwork in a fun and safe environment.
Program Goals:
The Newport Yacht Club’s sailing program is open to the general public without consideration of either gender, ethnic, or financial background. The principal objectives are to provide a safe, fun-filled environment for introducing children to the enjoyment of their local waters. Instructors are certified by US Sailing, with Red Cross qualifications in CPR/First Aid.
Students will acquire basic skills in seamanship, sailing, water safety, team work, and sportsmanship which are “Cornerstones” of the sport. It is a goal that individuals participating in this program develop confidence and feel comfortable sailing in our local waters.
While racing skills are encouraged, our number one priority is to encourage enthusiasm in the love of the water, good seamanship, good sportsmanship, good sailing skills, and the Newport Yacht Club Junior program in general. Success in racing is considered a extremely desirable plus to this primary goal.
