2007 Spring Fitting Out Auction
On Saturday, May 12th at 6:00PM, Newport Yacht Club will held its annual Spring Fitting Out Auction. This auction raised over $5,000 for the Newport Yacht Club’s community sailing program. This program introduces local youth, ages 8 through high school, to the sport of sailing and on-water safety using club boats. The club also allows the Rogers High School sailing team the use of these boats in the spring. We are proud to be able to invite these local children, without the requirement of parental membership (over 75% are children of non-members), down to our docks and give them the opportunity to experience boating in the "sailing capital of the world".
The contributions allow us the ability to provide this instruction, along with five fully paid scholarships applied for through the Newport Housing Authority, to the community at a price that is affordable by all who want the experience. The program provides two four-week sessions (three full days a week) for beginners and intermediates, as well as those who would like to try their hand at racing. The participants who have achieved an intermediate skill level and above are given the opportunity to sign up for Jr. sailing regattas held at various yacht clubs around the bay. This enables them to both expand their sailing skills, as well as make connections around the state with other kids with similar interests.
