Special Events for 2010

Big Boat Sailing

We hope to have one or two events where all juniors can experience an evening on bigger boats. The moonlight sails provided much enjoyment and learning the last few summers, and we are planning on providing the juniors with a similar experience this year.

Dances

We will have two dances, one each session. The students will pick a theme for each dance, and there will prizes for the best costume (for the theme) and the best dancers. Students from each session will be invited to both dances.

Awards Banquet

The annual awards banquet will be determined at a later date.

Independent Sailing

When a junior has achieved a certain achievement level, they will be allowed to take out the junior boats (weather permitting) on their own when they are not being used for classes. The specific rules for this are being defined and MUST:

Have a buddy boat

Be in before sunset

Get permission from someone in charge

Stay in a predefined area

The allowed predefined areas will be based on their Achievement Level. This will provide the juniors the opportunity to show off what they have learned to their friends as they will be allowed to bring a guest who is not be enrolled in the program.

O'Day Sailor

Take your parents out for a sail. Those Juniors who have achieved at least the Skippers rating will be eligible to rent the Newport Yacht Club’s 18 foot O’Day sailor, after being certified on that vessel by one of the Sailing Instructors.

The O’Day sailor is available for Newport Yacht Club members (including Junior members who have achieved at the Skippers rating) for rent by the hour. Reservations must be made in advance, and there is a standard charge for being checked out on that vessel).

The checkout certification includes:

Tacking, Jibing, getting into and out of irons, docking, and generally demonstrating that you can sail the vessel safely.
