The annual Larry X. Shea Jr. Memorial Race, which went on for about 13 years, was sailed on Narragansett Bay on a Saturday in September. The race is sailed in memory of NYC member and great competitor Larry Shea, who died tragically of a bee sting allergy in 1990. Larry was 1990 Ensign Regional Champion and twice, in 1988 and 1989, Triton National Champion. His proven racing ability and great promise were cut short by his death at age 40.
The race was open to four PHRF spinnaker and cruising classes, an Ensign class, and a sport boat class. Trophies were also awarded to the first Triton and the first Ensign to finish.
There was no fee to enter the race.
Drinks and refreshments from the grill were available at NYC during the post-race awards.
The trophies were donated by member Bill Shea, Larry's brother, and by their father and his family in Larry's memory.
